Strand Celtic U-18 Girls captured the first silverware of the season for the Club by defeating Yeats United in a close and entertaining game March 2018 in Cleveragh Astro.
The Girls went into the game in a confident mood having received a couple of setbacks earlier in the week losing two of their players through illness and injury. The game started brightly and Strand took an early lead when the ball ended up in the net coming off a Yeats defender .
Yeats however came back quickly and equalized shortly after following a free kick from the right that came back off the crossbar and the rebound was finished to the Strand net. The game settled down following these early goals and Strand started to take a hold playing some fine passing football. Strand won a free on the right of the box on 25 mins and as a result of this Sorcha Reddy lashed the free kick high into the Yeats net to regain the lead. Not getting carried away with this the Girls kept to playing their passing game and came close on a few occasions. Eventually the pressure paid off when Laura McGuinn finished to the back of the Yeats net from the edge of the box and sent the Girls into the interval with a 3-1 lead.
The second half started brightly and Yeats were now applying more pressure and came close on a couple of occasions but the Strand defense were dealing with it well. However Yeats were not giving up and reduced the margin again 20 mins into the second half. With the scoreline now at 3-2 it was set up for a tense finish and this added to the entertainment for the large crowd who were enjoying another close contest between these two sides. Both sides were creating chances but neither side could add any further goals and Strand ran out deserving winners on the night.
Well done to both sets of players for serving up a very entertaining game and congratulations to Strand on securing the U-18 League title for the club!
