Heartbreak for our young side as an injury time set piece cost us extra time in this league cup game.. the match was switched from Strandhill to the showgrounds Astro due to the severe weather.
Short eight players from the nill all draw in the recent league fixture due to players joining Sligo rovers youths and travelling we featured many of our recent youth league winning squad. We also lost Barry o Mahoney with injury and Conor Mc Donagh. In fact we had 6 u18 and 2 u19 starting.
We opened brightly and created some early chances and with brannnigan, o hara and mcccallion dominating midfield we had a good platform. Some of the quick passing football was a joy yo watch.. The first goal came when spellman released McCallion whose parried shot was then followed in by Jimmy monaghan. Carton equalised from a set piece just before half time. Both sides also hit the woodwork before half time.
Carton came into the game in the middle period of the second half but Doherty and Stafford were majestic at Centre back. Strand had to replace the injured mark mcccallion Mick’s way through the half. Both sides had chances but both keepers did well to keep the scores level. Again the woodwork was hit by both sides.
With minutes to go the Celts were unlucky when an o Boyle cross was met brilliantly by spellman whose header went narrowly wide. Then in injury time a long free kick from inside the Cartron half wasn’t cleated and Hargadon poked home the winner.
A disappointing day considering an excellent footballing performance. While the Celts had the lions share of possession we conceded from two set pieces which was disappointing.
Man of the match was debutant Donagh Flynn who was superb and composed at right full. Another young player front our youth system to come through this season.
